Meet Professor Stephanie Dashiell

Stephanie Dashiell is an English professor and Academic Coordinator of Developmental English at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) in Largo, Maryland. After earning her bachelor’s degree in English from Howard University, she entered the public school system as a high school English teacher in 2007. She received her Master of Arts in Teaching from University of Maryland University College and a graduate certificate from George Washington University. She is currently completing her doctoral degree at Sam Houston State University. She has taught a variety of student demographics, but underprivileged and international students are her specialty. She began teaching at PGCC in 2013, and she quickly fell in love with teaching on the collegiate level.

As an English professor, she prepares students for college-level work and the workforce. She also specializes in teaching grammar, literature, and creative writing. As the academic coordinator of developmental English, she collaborates with other full-time English faculty to create curricula, assess the program, and collaborate with other departments/areas of the college in order to support and educate students. She also collaborates with several organizations in the community to support students even further. Professor Dashiell teaches face to face and online classes. She makes herself available for students outside of traditional work hours because that is when students need support the most. One area of expertise Professor Dashiell excels in is being able to utilize creativity and innovation in the classroom. She uses a mixture of traditional and differentiated instruction including virtual reality, coding, and video editing in the college classroom. Professor Dashiell builds meaningful relationships with students and prepares them for life outside of the classroom as well. Professor Dashiell has a documented history of increasing student success by personalizing the curriculum, playing fun educational games with students, and helping students see how the information taught in class relates to the real world. In addition to her personal accomplishments, she has been recognized with awards and accolades such as most creative teacher, exemplary faculty for the college’s poster campaign, and innovative teaching practices.

Professor Dashiell not only loves educating students, but faculty as well. She travels worldwide in order to share her love of teaching with faculty and administration. She has given several workshops such as, “Twitter in the Classroom,” “Using Interactive 3D Bulletin Boards to Enhance Learning,” “3 Tools to Enhance Your Course” and “Best Practices of English for Courses in Other Disciplines.” In 2012, she took five students to Italy and Greece for an educational tour. This trip changed the lives of these students forever. One student’s parent said, “When my child came back from Italy/Greece, she was changed. I never saw her take her education so seriously until then.” Ultimately, Professor Dashiell thrives on making learning fun for students on all levels. She keeps in contact with many of her former students thanks to social media. You can keep in contact with Professor Dashiell’s latest updates by following her on Instagram at @professordashiell. A fun fact about Professor Dashiell is that she is a concert pianist, and she plays piano, flute/piccolo, and bassoon. She also sings soprano with Grammy nominated gospel artist, Ricky Dillard and New G.
